Day 9- Toscana

By Day 9, Emily and Tony were wondering, 'so we've tasted all this wonderful table wine...where does it actually come from??' To find out, they first did a literature search, followed by an extensive surveying of the land, looking for signs of grape cultivation, and finally happened on one territory called "Poliziano Winery," (near Montepulciano proper) with large welcome sign, "Tasting here." (apparently they do this all the time in wine country)... :)
We held our wallets and opted for the nice deal of 2 free tastings with 1 purchased bottle of wine.

We headed back to nearby Montepulciano to make a bigger buy after more sampling (don't worry, we always filled up on food and hill-climbing prior to driving) with 3 bottles, including 1 of the area's famed "Vino Nobile." Then we headed to Perugia (the chocolate-town of Italia and producer of Baci, the international rival of the Hershey Kiss; if you dare, see their website and listen to their strangely familiar ad tune). There, we saw fancy cars, fountains,

and more expansive views (borinnng :) ).

We tried their 'local' tartufo dishes, which though tasty, unfortunately did not live up to that of the Roman cafe. We bought fancy desserts in a candy store (when in Perugia...), and enjoyed a dark-night ride back to Cortona for our last evening in our villa.

As an aside, it was in Perugia that Tony saw an equivalent of "the eye of providence" in a church for the second time this trip. Art lovers and those fascinated with the practice of cross-cultural symbol-borrowing may also find this of interest. Hard to make out, but the man is pointing toward this icon above.
